At Starrcade 1997, Sting eventually defeated Hollywood Hogan to become the new WCW World Champion. The finish was a controversial one, meaning the title was held up the next night on Monday Nitro. This meant that the upcoming battle royal at the World War 3 pay-per-view would decide a new number one contender for the gold.

Scott Hall was the man to win that match, promptly being scheduled for a bout opposite Sting at SuperBrawl in February. This was a huge moment for Hall, as he had never quite been able to reach the main event mountain permanently when working as Razor Ramon in the WWF.

Talking with Sports Illustrated this week, Hall couldn't hide his frustration (even after all these years) over the fact his proposed match with Sting didn't end up happening. Instead, Hogan was slotted in for a rematch against the Stinger.

Meanwhile, Scott was forced to settle for a tag-team match with Kevin Nash against The Steiner Brothers. At the time, Hall believed that Hulk had sabotaged his push in WCW, blocking the chance for him to move up the ladder towards the World Title.
