On July 6, 1998, Bill Goldberg ended a journey that had started with his WCW debut in September of the previous year. Defeating Hollywood Hogan in the main event of Monday Nitro, Goldberg became the new WCW World Champion and continued an undefeated streak that had captured the collective imagination of the wrestling world.

During a Facebook Q&A session this week, Goldberg lifted the lid on the situation in 1998. Many likely assumed that WCW management wanted to capitalise quickly on Goldberg's phenomenal appeal, which is why they handed him the World Title. Something that won't be common knowledge is that Bill himself wasn't given too much notice about the Hogan bout.

A scant three days before stepping through the curtain on Nitro, Goldberg was informed that he'd be winning the World Title from the iconic Hulkster and thus dropping his WCW United States Title.

One of the most historic moments in company history was only conceived 72 hours before it happened. Goldberg went from being WCW's hottest new performer to the top guy in the promotion in just three short days.
