Finn Bálor was fully aware that some wrestling fans would be upset with WWE for putting him on (perceived developmental brand) NXT when he signed with the promotion. It was actually Bálor's own choice, because he wanted to prove to Triple H that he could fit into the WWE system before hitting the main roster.

Speaking with Metro Sport, the Irishman claimed he learned way more in 2 years on NXT than he did across 10 years on the independent scene or in New Japan Pro Wrestling. There was a lot to take in for Bálor; previously, he had focused mainly on wrestling to hard cam or just having the best match possible. Now, he had to concentrate on a multi-cam set up.

WWE's own 'Sports Entertainment' style had to be embraced too, and that can't have been easy for someone who was used to exclusively working lengthy matches designed to pop hardcore fans. Learning how to appeal to a mass audience was a baptism by fire for Bálor.
