That wasn't the first time the King had clashed with WWE production staff.

According to Jim Ross on the Killing The Town podcast, he and Lawler elected to stop attending crunch production meetings during the height of their fame as a commentary duo in the Attitude era. It was Jerry who broached his concerns with JR first, and Ross agreed they were getting nothing from the sessions.

So, they simply stopped attending. Ross didn't say whether or not Vince McMahon wanted to know why, but he did tell a story about the boss getting ratty a while later when JR ignored his talk back advice over the headset; Vince had forgotten a key storyline change, and that's why Jim rubber-eared him.

Both Lawler and Ross felt the production meetings were "complete chaos" and undermined their ability as a broadcasting team. To JR, the conferences were a hindrance to McMahon as well, and they only caused him to get confused.
