Despite the heartfelt wishes of many, it seems WWE will never truly turn John Cena heel. The company simply make far too much money from merchandise sales, and have been able to find a nice balance for the veteran. Younger children adore Cena, whereas many adults (mostly male) are free to boo him out of the building.

In 2004, Cena didn't hear many boos directed his way when he worked against Rene Dupree. Sporting an arrogant Frenchman gimmick, Dupree recently discussed why his then-rival didn't hear the same intense negativity he often does today during their feud. Telling The Hannibal TV about the rivalry, Dupree said that there was a simple reason it worked.

Instead of trying to get himself over with the fans, Rene focused on being a true heel. Avoiding anything too flashy, the villain wanted to leave all of the showmanship to Cena, knowing it would excite the fans and lead to cheers for the intended babyface.

Using a variety of submissions and dirty tactics, Dupree didn't want to let fans revel in the moment as he was beating up John Cena.
