Appearing on the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast, Seth Rollins admitted that Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and himself didn't really want to break up The Shield in the Summer of 2014. Instead, the trio wanted a big babyface run that would last a while first. WWE toyed with this before ultimately deciding that Rollins should join The Authority.

The Shield had worked opposite Evolution as faces, but WWE's creative team saw more value in Rollins as a heel who splintered away from Reigns and Ambrose. Seth disagreed, because he didn't see himself as the bad guy of the group at all, but WWE's need for fresh singles stars outweighed any desire to see The Shield run roughshod as good guys.

That was disappointing to Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose. Perhaps the need to scratch that babyface itch as a group is why Seth and Dean have been put back together as a tag-team in 2017. To Rollins, breaking up The Shield when WWE did seemed like the worst idea ever.
