Who You Think Created It: Shawn Michaels.

Who Actually Created It: It's true that Michaels spotted Kevin Nash working as Vinnie Vegas on WCW TV and asked his buddies The Steiner Brothers who the big guy was. Shawn had been seeking somebody to work as his heater at ringside, and wanted to move on from the Luna Vachon experiment.

Once Nash jumped from WCW to the WWF, he needed a gimmick. Shane McMahon was the one who came up with Diesel - both Nash and Bruce Prichard (you'll be seeing his name a lot) have said that Shane and friends would use the word "diesel" to describe something that was cool - 'that guy was so diesel'.

Nash started carrying himself like his sh*t didn't stink and matched Michaels' '80s rockstar style, but he also added in some more contemporary elements to fit Shane's vision for what a cool big man would look like.
