10 Wrestling Gimmicks Probably Made Out Of Spite
4. Demolition
Created due to a mixture of jealousy and spite, Demolition was put together because Vince McMahon wanted his own Road Warriors. When he wasn't able to tame Hawk and Animal and bring them to New York, McMahon instead decided to create his own variation of them.
As The Masked Superstar, Bill Eadie worked for WWF throughout 1983 and '84, squaring off against major names like Bob Backlund, Hulk Hogan and Sgt. Slaughter. Eadie would return in '86 as Super Machine alongside Andre the Giant (Giant Machine) and Blackjack Mulligan (Big Machine).
By 1987, the Road Warriors were global megastars and a staple of Jim Crockett Promotions. Unable to lure them to WWF, McMahon brought Eadie back, renamed him Ax and paired him with Randy Colley (the former Moondog Rex) to create Demolition.
Colley would soon be replaced by Barry Darsow/Smash, and 'proper' Demolition was born. There was face paint, there was intimidating ring gear, there was the bangin' entrance theme, and there were intense, erratic promos.
To their credit, Eadie and Darsow, err, smashed it as Demolition, regardless of their formation only coming about as McMahon couldn't land the Road Warriors. Once Vince did land Hawk and Animal in 1990, Demolition - which now included Crush - was quickly steamrolled by The Legion of Doom.
