10 Wrestling Gimmicks That Got Out Of Control

6. Finn Bálor's 'Demon'

This admission was the inspiration for this article.

New NXT Champ Finn Bálor told Digital Spy that he grew to lean on his off-shoot 'Demon' gimmick like a crutch whenever he was bereft of ideas. Instead of being a sporadic sensation he could dust off to make major pay-per-view matches more exciting, it became a nuisance that he admits "spun out of control".

It's hard to argue against his point here. The 'Demon' played before diminishing returns the more and more Bálor used it. For proof, just check out the complete lack of excitement surrounding his SummerSlam 2017 match with Bray Wyatt, or even less thrills one year later against Baron Corbin on the same event in 2018.

The 'Demon' became a lazy way to frame Finn's feuds. He'd be up against it as plain old Bálor, then bust out the face paints to roar back at opponents and put them in their place. Rinse and repeat. Rinse and repeat. Rinse. And. Repeat.
