10 Wrestling Heel Turns That Never Should Have Happened
5. Alberto Del Rio (WWE, 2015)
Go back to watch WWE's Hell In A Cell 2015 pay-per-view and be prepared for an almighty pop when Alberto Del Rio makes his comeback. The cheering got even louder when the Mexican vanquished John Cena and became the new WWE United States Champion. That was as good as it got for the returning Mexican.
The very next night on Raw, Zeb Colter joined Del Rio to create the fictional nation of 'MexAmerica'. This was not what those fans who had cheered wildly for Alberto's return wanted from the comeback king. Each passing week only made it clear that WWE didn't have a clue what to do with Del Rio.
Standing like a mute as Colter chastised the fans, the Mexican star looked like he would rather be anywhere else. Given that the promotion's next gig for Del Rio involved joining the League Of Nations faction, it's hardly surprising that Alberto decided to leave WWE in August 2016, less than a full year after returning.
What should have been the launching point for a babyface run proved to be a false dawn.
