10 Wrestling Heel Turns That Should Be Erased From History

1. Steve Austin

There’s no definitive start and end date for The Attitude Era, but the end of the peak could possibly be WrestleMania X-Seven.

It’s a bit of a shame, as many fans cite that show as the greatest Mania the company has ever put on. It could have been the start of an exciting new era, or at least a strong continuation of the last, but it was really the beginning of a bad mess that angered millions of fans and led to a disastrous heel run for The Texas Rattlesnake.

At that time, The Rock and Austin were the two hottest faces in the business. They were two once-in-a-lifetime stars that could have been the top hero at nearly any other time in WWF history. But instead of having two amazing good guys, the company turned one, and it stunk.

Austin and McMahon joining forces just felt wrong. All that great TV they put on facing off against each other felt sullied. No one bought into them being able to put away their hatred, and new babyfaces that were given big pushes like Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho just weren’t anywhere near Austin’s level. None of it worked.

The megastar never again returned to the same level of popularity after he turned. It was a complete disaster, and one that should be erased from history!

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
