10 Wrestling-Inspired Movies That Would Be Better Ideas Than 'Crossface'

The Montreal Screwjob is the most famous legitimate double-cross in professional wrestling history, a shocking incident broadcast live on pay-per-view across the globe that shocked both fans and industry insiders alike. The backstage politics and machinations behind the incident would make for gripping cinematic entertainment, providing a unique blend of sports movie, legal drama and conspiracy thriller that audiences would lap up.

WWF veteran Bret Hart had recently signed an unprecedented 20 year contract with the company, before chairman Vince McMahon reneged on the agreement claiming the company was facing financial difficulty and actively encouraged 'The Hitman' to negotiate with bitter rivals WCW. Terrified that Hart would defect to the competition while still recigbused as his world champion, McMahon masterminded the double-cross that saw Hart's bitter enemy (both onscreen and off) Shawn Michaels leave Hart's home turf with the belt.

The clandestine meetings between McMahon and his associates, how much opponent Michaels knew beforehand, the setup and execution on live television, the presence of Hart's friends and family as both part of the WWF roster and the audience, along with the subsequent backstage altercations (that included Hart punching his duplicitous boss square in the face) provide plenty of narrative depth.

Laced with paranoia, tension, suspicion and moral ambiguity, the story behind the Montreal Screwjob would make for a gripping reality-based thriller.

Do you agree that the entries on this list would make good movies? Are there any other famous wrestling stories you would have included? Let us know in the comments below.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
