Hardcore wrestling fans bloody love a good tournament.

In fact, it's one of the few things that unites a fandom in a state of constant civil war; whether it's the nostalgic patina of the old King of the Rings, or the mathematical intrigue of the late 2010s blow-away G1 Climax dream factory, fans love a bracket.

Except they mustn't, if the numbers are any indication.

Bizarrely, given that you read takes putting over tournaments all of the time, they've never drawn particularly well, at least in the west. Xavier Woods recently, successfully campaigned to become King Of The Ring. It was a long-held dream of his, informed by a sentimental love of an old tradition.

As the old adage goes, even a broken d*ckhead is right twice a day - and Vince McMahon, on occasion, is right not to listen to what they have slyly referred to as "a vocal majority". Often, this is an attempt to no-sell growing resentment of a certain development - but not always. The King Of The Ring, with just two exceptions, was the worst-performing big "five" PPV when it ran from 1993-2002.

Sometimes, your deeply-felt personal nostalgia is precisely that; something that never connected with the masses no matter how ardent your love of it.
