10 Wrestling Matches That Accidentally Filmed Things You Weren't Meant To See
7. Paul Turner Frantically Tells Marty Scurll To Go Home At All In
All In was the greatest near-disaster that ended up being a fantastic, life-affirming show on reflection.
This almost wasn't the case.
A good undercard lacked the spark required to really unglue the crowd, but Cody, fittingly enough, lit the fuse. The big matches were all tremendous, and they all showcased the range that proved so compelling in the world beyond WWE: timeless pure wrestling drama; wild plunder brawls imbued with comedic flair; state-of-the-art athletic violence.
And then Marty Scurll Vs. Kazuchika Okada happened.
Impossible to re-watch in the same spirit, post-Speaking Out, the Chicago crowd was on fire under Scurll's expert grasp. This was his finest individual performance. His psychology was exceptional; by slowly convincing the crowd that he needed their roaring support to overcome the size discrepancy, he indeed overcame with as much belief as technical creativity.
"Slowly" is the word; Scurll and Okada went over their time allocation by 14 full minutes, reducing an out-of-this-world main event into something merely excellent. They were told, loudly and frequently, to go the f*ck home. When they didn't receive the message, referee Paul Turner was dispatched to ringside. You can see him above (just) crouching by the apron, covering his face.
He screamed "Marty!".
Actually, he screamed "MARTY!", in all caps, to convey the urgency of the situation. He almost f*cked the whole thing up, and Turner advised him of this very, very loudly.
