10 Wrestling Matches Which Quickened Edge's Retirement

2. Edge Vs. Mick Foley (WrestleMania 22)

In his own words, Edge wanted to use his WrestleMania 22 Hardcore battle against Mick Foley to cement his place at the top of the main event tree in WWE. The man had come into his own as a headlining heel, finally stumbling upon a character which could help him rise above the mid card pack as a singles star.

Facing Foley was the perfect chance to prove himself in Edge's eyes, and boy did he deliver with aplomb. Barbed wire, thumb tacks, and even flaming tables all came into play during this stunner of a match, with Edge taking a lot of punishment. It's highly plausible that a pile-driver delivered by his foe didn't do the man's neck any good, and it was a tremendous risk for Edge to take such a move given the fact he had already undergone surgery on the area.

All in all, Foley vs. Edge only lasted around 15 minutes, but it felt epic. They crammed a lot of stuff into that time frame, and there was a whole load of misery for the pair to experience before it was all said and done. The finish - an Edge Spear from the ring apron through the flaming table - looked amazing, but it was clear there was a lot of damage done in order to create that visual.
