10 Wrestling Myths Debunked
3. WWE Gave Up On The Lockbox Angle
Heading into WrestleMania 32, WWE concocted a preposterous storyline whereby a returning Shane McMahon threatened to reveal a secret hidden inside a lockbox and ended up facing The Undertaker inside Hell in a Cell with a potential GM role & the lockbox on the line... oh and The Undertaker's retirement. In the end, 'Taker emerged victorious at 'Mania, Shane had to surrender the lockbox to his father who inexplicably gave him a quasi-GM role, and WWE forgot about the whole thing in a matter of weeks.
The myth that fans perpetuate to this day is that the company "gave up" on the lockbox angle; that the mystery surrounding whatever Shane was holding over Vince's head to convince the Chairman to put the position of Raw General Manager up for grabs was discarded. In reality, the contents of the lockbox were merely a way to set up this headline match for The Show Of Shows. I'll admit it's incredibly underwhelming for it to be a plot device and whatever the lockbox contained never to be revealed, but they didn't drop the angle. WWE simply concluded it by keeping the secret a secret because Vince's guy won... and on the Raw after WrestleMania McMahon announced he'd destroyed the lockbox's contents so now we'll never know.
