10 Wrestling Promos That Started REAL Backstage Heat
4. Scott Steiner And DDP
It’s a well-known slice of wrestling infamy that Diamond Dallas Page once squared up to Scott Steiner and tried to batter him for real, but it usually tends to get lost in the telling precisely how it started.
Long story short, Steiner is the reigning WCW World Champion and, for whatever reason, really doesn’t like Page. Then, one night, when given a live mic and instructed to cut a promo asking Ric Flair who his next opponent is, uses it as an opportunity to bury Page. A man Steiner knows fine well he won’t be working.
He tells him to get a sex change, tells Flair to send him to the “bush leagues”, and calls him “proof that you can take somebody out of the trailer park but he'll always be white trash”. Finally, he gets down on his knees, and begs Flair to let him fight him.
DDP, presumably having no idea why he’s suddenly been made the focal point of a promo he wasn’t even involved in, demanded answers from Steiner. No satisfactory answers forthcoming, he just tried to deck him instead. Fair enough.
