10 Wrestling Repeats That Just Didn't Work

1. Lex Luger Cast As The 'Next' Hulk Hogan

'Hulkamania' was a powerful marketing tool for Vince McMahon in the 1980's. Everyone wanted a piece of Hulk Hogan, he was like a cartoon character come to life, and McMahon loved building his WWF promotion around the character.

Much like all good things, however, the successful run had to come to an end at some point.

That point was with the turn of the 80's into the 90's. After failing to supplant Hogan with The Ultimate Warrior, McMahon briefly allowed the likes of Bret Hart to shine in the main event scene.

Relatively quickly, he changed direction again, likely wanting more of the success he had experienced with Hulk.

The man chosen to lead this new movement was Lex Luger. An expensive, cross-country bus expedition was embarked upon, and Luger was recast as an 'American Hero' akin to how Hogan had previously been presented.

It was difficult to swallow for those who had followed the promotion for years. Lex wasn't as colourful as Hogan in promos and people didn't relate to him the same way. Less than a full year later, the experiment was over and the WWF would move on to putting smaller, more dynamic performers in feature spots.
