10 Wrestling Retirement Matches Where The Loser Came Back

7. Kevin Sullivan Vs. Chris Benoit - The Great American Bash 1997

Much has been written about the Kevin Sullivan-Chris Benoit feud, but for a quick refresher course, here's an outline. Benoit was feuding with WCW booker Sullivan, and the aging star decided to add a personal component to the program. He crafted a storyline where his real-life wife, Nancy, began having an affair with Benoit, and in order to make as many fans as possible think it was real, he made them travel together. Before long, Benoit and Nancy actually did start having an affair, and she left Sullivan for Benoit.

Their feud continued, leading up to a retirement match at The Great American Bash 2007. Sullivan, nearly 48, was ready to hang up his tights and focus on booking, so he lost the match as planned and took a behind-the-scenes role.

Sullivan remained retired - more or less - until WCW went out of business, though he did have a brief (primarily non-wrestling) role with a revived version of The Varsity Club. After the promotion folded, though, Sullivan was back in the ring for indy promotions like Future of Wrestling, Pro Pain Pro Wrestling and the All World Wrestling League.

He still competes sporadically today.
