10 Wrestling Rivalries Too Personal To Be Fake
1. Bret Hart Vs. Shawn Michaels
Realistically nothing else was ever going to top this list. The feud between two of the best in ring pro-wrestlers at the time was never going to be able to stay just on-screen, especially when you hear about Shawn Michaels' attitude back in the '90s.
During Bret's title reign, Michaels was critical of Bret, saying he was bringing family matters into the ring by defending the belt against the likes of Owen Hart and Davey Boy Smith.
The origin of this feud seems to date back to The Hitman's world title win against Diesel. It was after this Bret reclaimed the WWE Championship from Diesel in 1995 that Big Daddy Cool apparently said to Hart "Don't forget who did you the f-ing favour". He seemed to be suggesting that Hart would have to pay a member of the Clique back for this win. Hart had problems with the group's attitude before this and this comment by Diesel only escalated his feelings towards them. One member of the Clique just so happened to be Shawn Michaels.
After HBK won the 1996 Royal Rumble the stage was set for him and The Hitman to go one on one at WrestleMania. This match would go 60 minutes with the two stiffly hitting each other throughout. Hart would drop the belt to Michaels and be absent from WWE television for a few months.
When Hart returned he entered back into a feud with Michaels. The pair traded insults on live TV where Michaels accused Bret of cheating on his wife with valet Sunny. Months later, infamous "Montreal Screwjob" would take place at Survivor Series 1997 that saw Bret lose the title to HBK against his will.
Furious, Hart would not return to the WWE for over a decade. Thankfully, he and Michaels would publicly reconcile in 2010 on WWE TV.
