It's one of ECW's most legendary rivalries, Sabu vs. Taz, and stretches all the way back to the cult promotion's NWA affiliate days, with their first match taking place in October 1993. Later, 'The Tazmaniac' was a frequent ECW Heavyweight, Television, and NWA Independent World Championship opponent for Sabu, though they were throwing down all the way through to Taz's final few weeks with the company.

Their final match aired on ECW on TNN's 29 October 1999 episode. Three months later, Taz debuted for WWE at Royal Rumble 2000).

Taz and Sabu's tension was particularly pronounced ahead of their Barely Legal match, which was preceded by the duo not laying a hand on each other for 18 full months on television. The duo spent a full week holed-up together, preparing for the bout, which fellow ECW legend The Sandman claims would have driven Sabu up the wall. "He must've been f*cking miserable," he said during a Highspots Wrestling Network video. "No wonder he hated him so much."

Mikey Whipwreck described a tense environment ahead of the pay-per-view, saying that Taz and Sabu both had different ways of wanting to do things. Sabu was wound up tight, cussing Taz behind his back, threatening to kill him, getting frustrated when minor preparation spots went wrong, though fortunately, they were able to get it together on the night.
