"Stratospheric", was how lucha libre legend Konnan once described the heat between the original Sin Cara and Alberto Del Rio.

It stretches back to long before either man ever stepped into a WWE ring. Whether or not Konnan is a reliable narrator is up for debate, though he alleged things once got so bad between the two that Sin Cara (or one of his associates) once pulled a gun on Del Rio backstage. This was when both were in Mexico, where, as Mistico, Sin Cara was one of the world's highest-drawing wrestlers. Mistico apparently let his status go to his head during this period, leading to Del Rio calling him out for what he perceived to be a poor attitude (which sounds absurd, knowing what we do about Alberto in 2022).

Years later, a WWE Raw six-man tag featuring Sin Cara and ADR on opposite sides saw Alberto remove his opponent's mask, considered a huge sign of disrespect in Mexico. While it looked accidental at surface level, the duo's past led talk that perhaps it wasn't so accidental.

Then, in 2013, another match featuring the duo played out acrimoniously, with Cara suffering a dislocated finger after being kicked by his rival in the match's very first move. Refusing to continue, the masked man caught immense flak for pulling out of a bout for such a minor problem.
