10 Wrestling Romances That Ended In Disaster
6. Kevin Sullivan & Woman
For obvious reasons, this article won't be dipping into the relationship between Chris and Nancy Benoit. However, Benoit wasn't the first pro wrestler that Nancy was married to.
Kevin Sullivan is so old school he should be valedictorian - and when he was booking WCW in the late nineties, he set himself up to get Benoit over, writing himself to become the eventual loser in a year long feud during which Benoit would 'steal' Sullivan's valet (and real life wife) Nancy 'Woman' Sullivan.
That old school booker's mentality bit him in the behind, however - because Sullivan insisted that Benoit and his wife travel together to better sell the angle. That same attitude that insisted that heels room with heels and babyfaces drink with babyfaces essentially forced two people playing lovers on television into close working proximity with each other off camera as well as on.
This almost inevitably left Sullivan, Benoit and Nancy in the horrible position of having to play out a shoot break-up in a worked environment. Pro wrestling relies on cooperation between the parties to work. Sullivan had written himself into a corner: to do his job, he had to do the job for the man who'd stolen his wife.
Their matches were fierce and stiff - but, incredibly, no one ever went into business for themselves. Old school to the end, Sullivan stuck to his booking strategy and made Benoit look as good as he could: of course, no one had any way of knowing what was in their future...
