10 Wrestling Romances That Ended In Disaster

4. Matt Hardy & Lita

Probably the most public real life break-up in wrestling, Matt Hardy and Lita initially seemed as though they were fated to be together. Forming Team Xtreme with Matt's brother Jeff, the three were one of the WWF's hottest properties for several years.

Suffering a serious knee injury in August 2004, Hardy was on the shelf for months while Lita stayed on the road, travelling with Hardy's real life best friend Edge. It turned out that travelling wasn't the only thing the two had been doing together, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

When Hardy found out, alone at home and with a lot of pent-up anger, he vented his feelings on the subject online. Unfortunately, given that Edge and Lita were involved in high profile angles, Hardy was the least valuable point of the triangle and was released in April 2005.

But the fans knew why Hardy had been fired, and the live crowd booed underdog babyface Lita everywhere she went, derailing her storyline with Kane. In an early instance of online gossip affecting a wrestling angle, plans were changed: Lita was paired with her real life lover Edge, bizarrely turning heel by turning on the abusive maniac who'd made her life hell.

It got weirder: hearing the crowd chant for Hardy, the company brought him back to feud with the two people who'd broken his heart in real life. Still, it revitalised his career in the midcard, and he continued to wrestle for WWE for another five years.
