10 Wrestling Storylines That Don't Get Enough Love
1. "She Was Mine Before She Was Yours!"
Blackly hilarious, the programme between Ric Flair and Randy Savage was something atypical of the WWF for its era; predating advances in technology (!) and channeling the real-life foibles of its larger-than-life players, this felt as personal for the fans as it did for its protagonist.
In order to burrow his way into Savage's fragile mind, Flair aimed to exploit his paranoia by, as was later revealed, fabricating an affair with his wife Elizabeth. Savage was notoriously "protective" over her in real life. Though this was well known within a more guarded, pre-Internet inner sanctum, the fans need only have watched Savage to infer it. The man was the most intense wrestler on the planet. Flair doctored idyllic images of himself and Elizabeth enjoying poolside dates and champagne breakfasts, taunting Savage with his boasts of unbeatable sexual prowess and disgustedly referring to Elizabeth as "damaged goods".
This wasn't merely your favourite wrestler's wife Flair had shamed: this was Miss Elizabeth, the beautiful, innocent, gentle first crush of a generation. She was, to many, femininity idealised - and here was Flair casually tossing her aside like last year's car model. He was begging for a reckoning - which Savage delivered in a classic match at WrestleMania VIII.
Textured with comedy - Mr. Perfect was a riot throughout - this programme was phenomenal, but the real-life stories surrounding the WWF at the time grabbed the real magazine headlines.
