Going into WrestleMania 13, change was afoot. In the stands, fans were embracing 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin's menace, and they were starting to grow tired of Bret Hart's goody-two-shoes hero schtick. The era of the anti-hero loomed, and it turned what was already a surefire cracker of a match into a money-making masterclass.

Austin and Hart, natural enemies with opposing views on heroism, switched places simultaneously.

Bret, who had been a babyface since going solo earlier in the decade, suddenly became a jaded, bitter veteran heel. Austin, a snarling pitbull brawler who epitomised the classic villain, turned into an unlikely smash hit as a "good guy". His unwillingness to quit at 'Mania, and Hart's reluctance to relinquish the Sharpshooter, flipped the predicted script.

From there, Bret had a brilliant final few months in the company as an anti-American whiner, and Austin went from strength-to-strength as the top babyface in the biz. Millions of dollars were made, countless great matches were had and both men were freshened up by the unforeseen dual switch.
