There is a valid criticism levelled at Tony Khan that he gets distracted by a new shiny toy. It's understandable that a wrestling promotion would see available talent like Ruby Soho, Athena and Saraya and want to bring them in, but all three of them, not just Saraya, were labelled game-changers for the underutilised AEW women's division.
It's a fair criticism, because Soho and Athena very quickly became irrelevant due to non-committal booking and lack of planning. What makes the signing of Saraya even more baffling is there is a potential cornerstone of the division hiding in plain sight.
The fans are behind Jamie Hayter.
When Hayter returned to All Elite Wrestling and was positioned as muscle for Britt Baker, quite a few people assumed she would be the catalyst for a D.M.D. face turn. Baker's original face run didn't work out, but this is now a better, more engaging Baker who the fans could rally behind.
That support has instead gone to Hayter, who now looks like the breakout star of the division and the one the fans are clamouring for. Currently locked in a confusing and long winded break up with her boss, when Jamie does stand up for herself, the crowd will explode.
One sure thing for 2023, is we will see Jamie Hayter draped in AEW gold. Perhaps a good bet to dethrone Jade Cargill?
