10 WWE Attitude Era PPV Matches That Are Severely Underrated
8. Test Vs. Shane McMahon - SummerSlam 1999
There may be a lot of people screaming at their computer screens right now that nothing involving Test could possibly be underrated. But give the guy a break, he was a very capable performer and had the ability to surprise you on occasion. Besides, any match that combined Test and Shane-O-Mac tended to yield mesmerizing results. But no one knew that going into SummerSlam. In fact, this two were about as green as could be, with Test a rookie to the business and Shane more comfortable watching from backstage than performing. To pad out the match and take some of the pressure off their technical naïveté, they made this a street fight and used frequent interference (as with most Attitude Era matches of any variety) from The Mean Street Posse and Vince McMahon's Stooges, Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco. But Shane and Test both showed some real grit in this match, and there was some tender meat in this weird little stew. Bolstered by the fact that Test was legitimately wrestling "for the love of Stephanie McMahon," (who he would only be allowed to date if he won the match), with each guy taking some fantastic bumps. Shane's overall squirrelly energy and surprising athleticism in this match (check out that corkscrew moonsault) slowly won over the crowd, but nothing in the match endeared him to WWE fans like that elbow drop from the top turnbuckle onto Test and through the Spanish announce table. Shane would later go on a hot streak as WWE's resident rag doll, putting his body on the line in increasingly mortifying ways. But this was a night where he proved he could hang with the boys, and that he was more than a kid with a trust fund and a passing interest in professional wrestling. ...And Test did a good job. Admit it, you guys.
