10 WWE Champions You Never Thought You'd See
5. JBL
For a long time, JBL was pegged as a guy who was going to stay in the undercard for the rest of his career. WWE had tried to push the tag team specialist so many times over the years, but it never amounted to anything. It felt like it was never going to happen.
Suddenly, WWE struck gold when they decided to shift Bradshaw into a major character change. The beer guzzling Texan was re-christened as Wall Street snob, John Bradshaw Layfield. In no time, Layfield became the most hated character on WWE television.
That kind of heat quickly led to Bradshaw defeating Eddie Guerrero for the WWE Championship. JBL would go on to hold that belt for the next 10 months. In that time, he dominated SmackDown; Until AJ Styles broke the record last year, the Texan was the longest reigning WWE Champion in the blue brand's history.
