9. Shane Douglas
For those of you that only know the PG Era of WWE, allow me to tell you a little bedtime story. Once upon a time, there was a roustabout little wrestling promotion called ECW. This naughty little company was largely centred on the notions that sex; violence and hardcore bloodletting were not only good for you, but also rather fun to watch. Madmen like Sabu and The Sandman plied their trade relentlessly, filling the ECW arena with their blood, sweat and tears for about a decade. In fact, the WWE liked their business model so much, that they took it for themselves and helped to put ECW out of business in the process... Quite frankly, none of the above would have happened without the actions of The Franchise Shane Douglas. Throughout the 1990s, Shane Douglas was the most vicious, most virulent and most hated heel in the wrestling business, somehow carrying himself with an air of arrogance, spite and entitlement that recalled the villains of the past like Nature Boy Buddy Rogers or Nick Bockwinkel, albeit with a hard-edged 90s twist. Today, with PG Era WWE searching high and low for anything that can add an air of legitimacy to their product, bringing back a veteran like Shane Douglas wouldnt be the worst idea in the world. If Douglas were presented as a seasoned performer, relentlessly going after one last shot at the big time, he would definitely get over with old and new fans alike. Then, the eventual, inevitable heel turn could see the wily veteran turning on his fans and embarking on an unstoppable reign of terror. The young star that eventually ended Douglas undefeated run would then get the rub in a way that few of WWEs present superstar set have truly managed.
