It would be nice if RVD could enjoy a decent final run with the WWE. His lacklustre return to the company last year started well enough (with a blistering bout against Chris Jericho, amongst others), but towards the end, enthusiasm on all sides had petered out significantly. All told, things began in June of 2013 and had wrapped up completely by August 2014, leaving the audience a little dumbstruck, it must be said. For its part, the company placed RVD in a few notable main events. He participated in the 2013 Money in the Bank Ladder Match, losing out to Randy Orton, and he wrestled Alberto Del Rio for the World Title a couple of times, again in losing efforts. By the end of his run, Van Dam was putting Bad News Barrett over in the Intercontinental Championship tournament and again on Pay Per View, having also resolutely failed to win the United States and World Heavyweight Championships, respectively. He just slid down the card, winning meaningless matches on Smackdown! and RAW, but failing the fans when it really counted, in title matches and Pay Per View events. By the end of his run, it was as if the fans could smell the WWEs lack of serious interest in Rob Van Dam. They knew he was leaving soon and, consequently, they knew that the company was going to job him out at every opportunity. It was just business, nothing more, on both sides and the fans seemingly stopped caring. For Van Dam, it was good exposure and a couple of big payoffs, for WWE it was the opportunity to promote a former star for nostalgia dollars. Frankly, Rob Van Dam deserves (and is capable of) much, much more. He may have a few grey hairs lining his signature ponytail and he may be a little slower in the ring these days, but RVD can still go. Here in 2015, lets see him get that final run at the top that we were promised back in 2013.
I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction.
I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long!
If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it).
I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work.
Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that!
Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?)
