10 WWE Face/Heel Turns That Must Happen In 2021

2. Goldberg Turns Heel

Goldberg has been one of the most controversial figures in modern wrestling. His retirement run of 2016/17 was mostly excellent but also ended the Universal Championship reign of Kevin Owens, a decision that infuriates many to this day.

He stayed retired for years until returning for a disastrous match against The Undertaker, before squashing Dolph Ziggler and eventually challenging The Fiend for his Universal Championship. WWE fans have rarely ever been as angry at a result than they were at Goldberg’s victory over The Fiend in just a few minutes, justifiably ranting about the unnecessary burial of Bray Wyatt’s magnificent character.

Now that he’s challenging for Drew McIntyre’s WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble, there’s the fear that he’ll do it for the third time, ending a promising young champion’s reign in order to promote fading nostalgia. A heel turn would fully lean into the fans’ true feelings and anxieties around Bill Goldberg, would lead to some great powerhouse action as an antagonist and is more likely to lead somewhere narratively fulfilling than keeping him as a face is.

Turning him heel is a way to salvage his current reputation, if he’s going to stay on WWE TV, he should be a villain.
