10 WWE Face Turns That Ultimately Failed

7. Alberto Del Rio: Mexican-American Hero? Yeah, Right - 2013

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxG7IXTiYOA WWE is always looking to corner the Latino market, which grows exponentially each year. From 2000 to 2010, the banner-waivers for the Latino movement were Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio, but Eddie tragically passed in 2005 and numerous injuries have subjected Rey to being a part-time wrestler. Desperate for new blood, WWE hired legendary Mexican luchador Mistico and repackaged him as Sin Cara, but the character fizzled after many botches and injuries. In late 2012, WWE looked to an unlikely place to carry the banner for the Latinos: Alberto Del Rio. Del Rio had a Million Dollar Man-type gimmick which made him difficult to cheer, but putting him up against adversity and having him overcome it (in this case, having to wrestle Big Show in a Last Man Standing Match) won him over with the crowd. Del Rio€™s first major feud after Big Show was against Jack Swagger and his mouthpiece Zeb Colter. The idea was to have Zeb€™s xenophobic rhetoric draw hatred, but because of Zeb€™s natural charisma, and the fact that nearly half the country probably agreed with his views, it had a reverse effect, and Del Rio, whose mic skills are his biggest weakness, couldn€™t keep up. By the time he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Dolph Ziggler, the crowd was already done with him. WWE did a double-turn at Payback, and the Del Rio babyface experiment was over.
