The Invasion angle will be best remembered as a missed opportunity. WCW vs. WWE was the stuff of dreams, but it ended up with Vince McMahon burying his rival company once and for all. What it did achieve, however, was to put over Kurt Angle like never before, by doing the unthinkable: forcing Stone Cold Steve Austin to tap out.

Amidst the confusion, Stone Cold was booked as a cowardly heel, a WWE turncoat. While Austin played the role to perfection, it was an odd use of the toughest SOB in wrestling, and the start of a series of strange choices which sped up his departure from the company. Still, take nothing away from Angle here: he’s asked to lead team WWE and he does so brilliantly. He bullies Austin into a title match, and not only beats him, but slaps on the ankle lock, leading to the Rattlesnake tapping clean in the middle of the ring.

Angle had a rocket strapped on him at this time, and he was solidified as one of, if not the, top guys in the company as the locker room poured out to celebrate his win in the ring. WCW vs. WWE may not have come off like it should have, but at least some good came out of it.
