10 WWE Matches Improved By Last Minutes Changes
2. The Gauntlet Match - SmackDown 2019
If you predicted that Randy Orton accidentally stepping on Mustafa Ali's face would have resulted in Kofi Kingston becoming WWE champion, then you should play the lottery more often.
Ali's gnarly eye injury led to Kingston replacing him in the Elimination Chamber match for Daniel Bryan's WWE title. Before this bout, there was a gauntlet match on SmackDown in which all six Chamber participants competed. This was where KofiMania was born.
Kingston started the match off opposite Bryan and, to everyone's shock, pinned the champion. Then he beat Jeff Hardy and Samoa Joe, before succumbing to AJ Styles after the better part of an hour in the ring.
This performance changed everyone's opinions on Kofi. For years he'd been a solid wrestler, but never main event material. Popular, but never a superstar. Well now he was just that and big things were on his horizon.
The gauntlet match eventually led to Kingston beating Bryan one-on-one at WrestleManai 35 to become WWE Champion for the first time in his career.
It is one of the most feelgood moments in the show's history and it never would have happened had it not been for Orton's errant boot.
