10 WWE Matches John Cena Absolutely MUST Have In 2025
2. Saying Farewell
One way or another, John Cena’s year is going to end, and he’s going have a “farewell match” that marks his retirement from active competition.
The open question is who he faces in this last match. Does he wrestle a familiar opponent, giving fans a bit of nostalgia? Or does he battle a main-event superstar like Cody Rhodes or Gunther, perhaps with a world title (and the elusive 17th world title reign) on the line?
Much like with the Montez Ford suggestion, why not use this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to elevate a newer wrestler by giving him one of the highest-profile matches possible? Jacob Fatu should formally send Cena off into retirement. Since bursting onto the scene, Fatu has been a force and the saving grace of the new Bloodline. He’s an explosive wrestler who screams “star” every time he moves around the ring.
Unlike his match with Solo Sikoa, Cena could actually further cement Fatu’s reputation as a killer by going out on his shield against the Samoan Werewolf. It’s not hard to imagine Fatu kicking out of an Attitude Adjustment at one and thrashing Cena, putting him down and effectively ending his career. Doing this would give Jacob bragging rights, a pelt to claim that he can hold over other wrestlers going forward.
For Cena, doing the “time-honored tradition” and putting over a major threat would be a stunning visual and ending to his career, but he still would be able to take a bow once the dust settles and get a proper farewell. Plus, it would subvert the “Cena wins, LOL” expectation that some fans will have.
