10 WWE Matches John Cena Absolutely MUST Have In 2025
3. Giving The Rub
There undoubtedly will be an effort to use John Cena’s farewell tour to put over talent along the way. It’s not unprecedented – during the past several years, Cena has lost to the likes of Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns, Austin Theory and Solo Sikoa.
Unfortunately, none of those losses really served to elevate his opponents, and that should be a priority for Cena in 2025. If he’s going to lose to a “young lion” type, then it should mean something, and there’s an ideal scenario and opponent where this could work tremendously.
In the previous column about mapping out Cena’s last year, one of the ideas proposed involved Cena entering the King of the Ring tournament, if only because it’s one of those bucket list items for the legend. But he shouldn’t win the crown – rather, Cena should make the finals and put over a wrestler whose elevation to singles stardom has been seemingly frozen in amber for an eternity: Montez Ford.
Ford has been tagged by many as a potential breakout singles star for the past couple years, a dynamic performer and personality whose magnetism makes him as close to a can’t-miss star as you can get. Why WWE hasn’t pulled the trigger on a singles run for Montez (who turns 35 this year) is beyond understanding.
Marrying these issues up, WWE could solve a lot of problems at once. Cena and Ford make it to the KOTR finals, setting up a PLE match between the two that gives Montez a signature singles victory, a title (King ‘Tez) and bragging rights. Cena, if he delivers on the night, would have helped make a star in a way that he’s fallen short in recent years.
