7. Checking Off A Bucket List Item
On the list of things John Cena should absolutely do in 2025, capturing his first Intercontinental Championship has to be near the top.
Much like Sheamus, there isn’t much that Cena hasn’t done in WWE, but winning the IC title is perhaps the most obvious goal for both. Cena is a four-time tag champ, five-time United States Champion and 16-time world champion, but he’s never held the workhorse title.
As fate would have it, the Intercontinental Championship currently is being held by someone who would be a tremendous opponent for Cena: Bron Breakker. The second-generation superstar is a highly touted, explosive wrestler who could match up with Cena similarly to Brock Lesnar (who isn’t on this list due to obvious complications), only younger and more dynamic in the ring.
Despite his near-invincibility, Breakker is still in his formative years, setting the stage for a confrontation where Cena would have to rely on his experience and guile to overcome the younger, stronger champion. Much like Sami Zayn earlier this year, it’s not out of the question for Cena to eke out a victory and capture the IC title, only to drop it (either back to Bron or someone else) after a short period.
This matchup also could force WWE to make a decision about how to book Breakker rather than straddling the line between heel and face. They’d likely need to either lean into a face-face respect angle, or go full-blown heel.
