10 WWE Midcard Matches That Stole Major PPVs

2. Ricky Steamboat Vs. Randy Savage - WrestleMania III

This match for the Intercontinental Title wasn't just a show stealer, it's one of the most classic performances in WrestleMania history. And while most fans will always remember WrestleMania III as the event that turned Hulk Hogan into a modern-day Hercules, picking up Andre the Giant and slamming him to the mat, they likely forget just how awful that match was otherwise. No, Steamboat vs. Savage is the true defining moment of that event, and it's unfortunate that it's so frequently overshadowed by an exceptionally mediocre climax. For fifteen minutes, they executed a picture-perfect match from start to finish, with absolutely zero filler or flab. Every moment of that performance was meaningful and necessary, and it set a template that's still lovingly emulated by some of today's best superstars. According to various sources (including Ric Flair), Savage's meticulous planning ahead of the match irritated the hell out of Steamboat, who much preferred to "call it in the ring" rather than map out every detail. In the end, though, Savage's method of excessive preparation clearly worked out for the best, as the match remains an intense, gripping exhibition to watch decades later.
