10 WWE Moments That Destroyed The 'Fiend' Character
4. The Firefly Funhouse Match - WrestleMania 36
If WWE ever had a chance to spare cult leader Bray Wyatt from being booked into oblivion, it was at WrestleMania 30. 'The Eater of Worlds' wasn't presented as the most formidable threat to John Cena, but he had an extremely vocal fanbase supporting him. To score a victory over him would have righted many wrongs.
Still, WWE just couldn't let 'Big Match John' count the lights.
As 'The Fiend,' Wyatt had a chance to seek vengeance in 'Mania 36. The build was executed well, focusing on how Cena's arrogance essentially gave birth to 'Him.' By the time the FireFly FunHouse match drew near, fans wanted to see the murder clown absolutely wreck the human G.I. Joe.
And he did, sort of.
Rather than see anything close to the match Wyatt had with Finn Balor, WWE produced a cinematic match that was less of a slobber knocker and more of an unusual viral video. What ensued was a series of random skits examing Cena's psyche while paying homage to professional wrestling's past.
The FireFly FunHouse match polarized fans. Some felt it was a step down from the Boneyard Match, while others enjoyed the absurdity. Either way, Wyatt's character would have looked like a juggernaut if he made short work of his old nemesis. Instead, 'The Fiend' headed down a path similar to the slasher films that influenced him, focusing more on dark (and cheesy) humor and less on what made him terrifying in the first place.
