One of unapologetic racist Jim Cornette's most frequently spouted old-school maxims is that 'any wrestler who comes out of a box is instantly over'. What's an egg if not a yolky, ovoid box? WWE tested this theory at Survivor Series '90, having teased that a fantastic surprise would hatch from its oversized shell, following weeks of incubation, come the Thanksgiving special. After all, it worked for Jesus Christ over Easter. Surely this'd be a similar success story?

Not quite. The only thing biblical about the birth was the cross faces and flood of boos which met it. WWE's big unveiling turned out to be, not, as some people had ludicrously believed, Ric Flair, but a 5'10" turkey, known as The Gobbledy Gooker. Gorilla Monsoon and Roddy Piper made a Herculean effort not to p*ss their pants as the giant fowl - in reality Héctor Guerrero - gigued with Gene Okerlund in the ring.

A disappointed audience left scrambled by the egg fiasco absolutely roasted the gimmick, and it was carved up soon after.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
