10 WWE Personalities Who Need To Retire (For Good)

4. Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio This entry is a little easier for me to write than Christian, (because he very well may be coming back to retire officially) but harder for the WWE to do. As a world wide company (check their first W) they reach a broad audience. This audience isn€™t just made up of people who are different colors and ages, but an audience that watches wrestling of different styles. I have never met anyone who is/was/will be a strictly WWE fan. I know a ton of people who hold the WWE as the benchmark for wrestling, but will still catch just about any wrestling show they can. With so many organizations out there, why choose to just watch one? Rey Mysterio is a mixture of things that the WWE needs. Rey Mysterio is a masked wrestler. While he is also known for his luchador style, the mask is a big identifier for him. In the WWE there have always been people who wear masks, but Rey is arguably the most marketable. The older fans respect him as a competitor, the younger fans think it looks cool and that generates a lot of money for the WWE. Rey shows love back to the kids wearing his mask by stopping along the rampway during his entrance and pressing his forehead against theirs and saying something encouraging. But Rey has the same issues as other guys featured on this list: numerous injuries and surgeries, his character is stale (has he ever been heel?), and he has been at it for decades. Wear and tear is one thing, but several surgeries on the same knee must be a nightmare. His gear sells well and he is never awful in the ring, so he is a big reason fans come to see the company€™s €œbiggest little man.€ The biggest problem is that he is the best representative for his country and his style there is. Alberto Del Rio has a shot to do so, but for me isn€™t as over as the company believes and Sin Cara is doing nothing to help alleviate pressure from Rey. (See his numerous injuries and the crowd€™s reaction to his matches.) What can Rey do about this? Nothing. He just has to continue on until someone else takes the spot. Who that is, at the moment is a mystery.
