10 WWE PPVs John Cena Main-Evented (But Shouldn't Have)
8. WrestleMania XXVII (Vs. The Miz)
Well surely, the WWE Championship match should have main-evented WrestleMania. That's only sensible, right?
Sure, ordinarily, but this was John Cena vs. The Miz, and Miz had not exactly been treated as a main-eventer. Despite being the WWE Champion going into WrestleMania, he had to play third fiddle to John Cena and The Rock's brewing rivalry. To add to that, he was booked as the ultimate chickens**t heel, and not someone the audience could take seriously as the top champion in the company.
In fact: WWE at one point weren't going to have Cena and Miz main event. The internal belief was that the Undertaker's WrestleMania streak had gained more importance than either of the world titles, and the original plan was for 'Taker and Triple H's no holds barred match to close out the show lest the crowd lose all their energy before the main event.
It turns out their instinct was correct, as Hunter and 'Taker's match stole the show and completely tired out the crowd. Cena and Miz didn't stand a chance. Not even the late inclusion of Rock's interference that cost Cena the match could match the heights of 'Taker's match. While it's understandable that WWE would want a major angle to get a prominent spot on the show, they would have had a better show if the streak match capped off the night.
