10 WWE PPVs John Cena Main-Evented (But Shouldn't Have)
7. Survivor Series 2008 (Vs. Chris Jericho)
At the 2008 Royal Rumble, John Cena made a shocking return from injury as the 30th entrant, and won the Rumble match to the utter shock and adulation of the Madison Square Garden crowd. Nobody expected Cena to make such a quick recovery, yet nonetheless, he defied expectations and generated one of the finest comebacks in wrestling history.
Doing the whole "comeback from injury" thing twice in the same year, however, is just a bit of overkill.
After SummerSlam 2008, Cena took some time off for a herniated disk. Survivor Series 2008, taking place in Cena's own Boston, was hyped as the grand return of Big Match John, as he challenged Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship.
However, it's only so often in such a short period of time you can pull off something like this. Sure, by 2008, Cena was the star of WWE, but they already pulled the trigger on a heroic comeback with his surprise return at the Rumble. So to have his return from another injury later in the year take the main event slot just comes off as, "Oh... okay. Why should I care?"
Instead of having, say, Edge's WWE title win or one of the various Survivor Series tag matches close out the show, fans were instead treated to a perfunctory match where Cena won another title, and we all were supposed to care because John was in his hometown and he was injured for a couple of months. That dog won't hunt, Monsignor.
