From @StevePyrke: Do you think we will ever see a massive curveball in the Royal Rumble and see a middle/lower card wrestler win?
I'd love it, but I doubt WWE would ever do it. That kind of thing rarely happens and WWE booking isn't very creative these days. Remember in 2011 when Santino finished second to Alberto Del Rio? That's about as close as a mid-card wrestler is going to come to winning it. Every year when it comes to Royal Rumble time, there are usually only three or four guys that have a legit chance to win, yet fans will always try to convince themselves it could be somebody else. History has shown that WWE uses the event to try to really put over somebody they want to put the WWE Title on, or at least push significantly after the Rumble match. Another idea that could work is pushing somebody brand new in that match. By that I mean a guy like Finn Balor, who could debut at the Rumble and also win the match. That's how you really make a guy into a main eventer in one night. The problem is with only one major World Title that they probably aren't going to be willing to try something like that. It would be a struggle to build Balor up as a credible challenger in the run-up to WrestleMania. At this point, my favorites to win the Royal Rumble are Brock Lesnar, John Cena and Dean Ambrose. Roman Reigns is also a favorite providing he's not WWE Champion at that point.
