It was the Doobie Brothers who said 'it's a young man's game', and they ain't wrong. Youth is the key now, and the upper echelons of World Wrestling Entertainment have been dominated by increasingly young competitors for years now. If you're an old codger, your chances of wandering back into the company confused for one last WWE Championship run are slim to none, and slim has just left.

The oldest WWE Champion to-date was none other than Vince McMahon, who was a whopping 54 years old when he won the title way back in September 1999. The Genetic Jackhammer held the title for a whole six days and never actually lost, choosing to vacate it after realising how ridiculous it was that he was holding it. Maybe.

Only one of the last five WWE Champions is over the age of 40, and three of them are 31 or younger. As time continues to fly by, the younger generations will continue to be at the front of the plane, making it unlikely that we'll have a WWE Champion older than 54 in the near future.

Unless that damn Undertaker comes back in four years for one last reign of course.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
