10 WWE Stars Whose Best Match Came Against Bret Hart
8. Roddy Piper
As one of the greatest talkers in wrestling history, when we
think of Roddy Piper’s most memorable moments, we don’t always consider his
in-ring work. But anyone who’s seen his WrestleMania VIII clash with Bret Hart
will know that he’s just as good at walking the walk as he is at talking the
talk.
Hart and Piper squared off in one-on-one action with the latter’s Intercontinental Championship on the line and the result was a suitably hard-hitting affair, in which Bret was even busted open, as the two blended brawling with technical wrestling excellence.
A similarly stellar story was told with the referee being knocked down, and the formerly villainous Piper battling with his conscience over whether or not to strike Hart with the ring bell.
Ultimately, the now-babyface would opt against it, instead locking in a sleeper. But Bret was able to springboard off the turnbuckle and reverse the hold into a well-leveraged pin, just in time for the referee to come around and count the win for Bret, marking one of the only truly clean losses in Hot Rod's career.
This was surely one of the contributing factors towards the Intercontinental Championship’s respected reputation. An awesome match worthy of its WrestleMania stage and in my eyes, at least, the best of Piper’s career.
