8. Vince McMahon Is The "Greater/Higher Power"

Let's stick with Vince for a second.

By 1999, the WWF were running out of ways to keep the iconic Austin vs. McMahon feud ticking. So, they kinda'/sorta'/almost turned Vince into a sympathetic babyface by having sinister overlord The Undertaker kidnap his darling daughter Stephanie and threaten to turn her into his demonic bride.

'Stone Cold' came to her rescue, and McMahon was eternally grateful. Except... he wasn't. Vince revealed himself to be the unknown "Higher/Greater Power" in early-June and famously said, "it was me, Austin. It was me all along, Austin". OK then, but why? Was Vince really willing to sacrifice his own flesh and blood just to make this reveal?

Apparently so. 'Attitude' era lovers look back on this period with gooey-eyed fondness, but the whole 'Corporate Ministry' thing was a mess of week-to-week booking and swerves for the sake of swerves. It's almost like Vince Russo was writing it...
