Fire up your time machine to watch television from 30 years ago, and it's likely you'll see at least some racism. Often passed off as a joke, painting one's face black was once considered jovial and light-hearted. Bad News Brown reportedly didn't see the funny side when Roddy Piper did it in time for 1990's WrestleMania VI.

Jiving with a 'Michael Jackson glove' on as he cut a promo alongside Gene Okerlund backstage, Piper then turned to reveal that he had painted half his body black. As a kid, this was very confusing to watch, because it just looked like somebody had played an elaborate practical joke on 'Hot Rod'.

'Blackface' characterisation is something thankfully lost to the sands of time in TV and wrestling now. Even if Bad News hadn't been angry at Piper then, he'd have had every reason to be in hindsight, because Roddy's decision to reach for the paint was unacceptable.
