Navigating choppy waters in the aftermath of the controversial first ever women's Money In The Bank ladder match, SmackDown Live!'s female division continues to outshine its flagship counterpart in terms of character development and overall match quality.

Both facets helped Natalya's unlikely dethroning of Naomi outperform the try-hard Alexa Bliss/Sasha Banks contest later in the show, and aid a dire opening portion of the show in desperate need of a payoff or angle advancement that remotely related to the hours and hours of endurance television the company often supplies.

A match that started slowly and subtly built to a rewarding climax, the contest was psychologically sound thanks to Naomi's endless selling of her back and shoulder following an early focussed attack from the veteran challenger.

It marked the best use to-date of Naomi's oft-abused high spots, as she was made to suffer for long portions before dazzling a grounded Natalya with various moves from the top rope, including an outside-in slingshot legdrop and a leg-scissors DDT.

Her over-confidence was ultimately her undoing though. Going for the high-step kicks, Natalya planted her in the splits, then powered through an awesome Sharpshooter counter to reapply the famed Hart hold and win this variation of the Women's Title for the very first time.

Despite heavy teasing, no Carmella cash-in followed, but a recent push towards inflating television numbers suggests it may only be 48 hours away.
